The St Denys Choir

The Church Choir has had a high reputation for over forty years It has sung in many cathedrals around the country, including Coventry, Worcester, Gloucester, Hereford, Exeter, St Davids, Brecon and, of course, Llandaff Cathedral, deputising on weekends to cover holidays of the cathedral choirs. In 2011, the choir will be singing weekend services at Salisbury Cathedral

The Choir consists of around twenty regular choristers. It leads the singing at the 9.30am and 6.30pm Sunday services. A different anthem is sung at every service and the Choir’s repertoire now exceeds 500 different anthems and service settings. On the fourth Sunday of the month, a full Choral Evensong is sung with full settings of the canticles and responses.

On special occasions such as the annual service of Nine Lessons and Carols, the choir is augmented by some other members who cannot regularly sing.

There is a lighter side to our work, performing a wide variety of music for social events in the parish. Each year in January, members of the choir prepare a meal for about 100 guests and also provide the entertainment based on the theme for the evening.

Choir Practice is on Thursday evenings in the Church Hall. The Choir offers a wonderful opportunity for boys and girls to gain a first-rate choral and musical training. This often gives young choristers a life-long hobby and interest.

St Denys Church is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). New members are always welcome: please contact the Organist and Choirmaster, Martyn Ridge.
